Fairy Tales were meant to function as a moral compass. But on closer inspection, are they even moral? Archetypes and stereotypes abound, and the stories are often terrifying, traumatizing, and worse. Daniel Ortberg’s latest The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror leans into the darkness and asks: what happens when you give a classic tale a contemporary makeover? In this collection, Ortberg subverts tales like A Little Mermaid, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast, to ask more meaningful questions and re-calibrate the compass.
