Milkweed Books is hosting a holiday card writing party on Sunday, December 8th in collaboration with Black & Pink! We hope to let incarcerated individuals know they are not forgotten during a time of year that can be particularly isolating for those in prison. We’ll provide some seasonal snacks and beverages, card writing supplies, postage, and space to work on your letters—you need only bring yourself and a compassionate, creative heart.
Founded in 2005, Black & Pink is an organization that supports LGBTQIA+ and HIV/AIDS positive prisoners in a variety of ways, including a pen pal program. Cards from these events bring moments of joy, connection and kindness to Black & Pink members. In 2018, over 6000 people across 378 card parties all around the US worked together to mail out over 27000 cards to LGBTQ/HIV+ incarcerated individuals. Join us in making even more meaningful connections this holiday season!
?BONUS: if you are participating in this event, you’ll receive 10% off any purchase made in the store that day! Unfortunately, we can’t send books to prisoners, but we will have representatives from the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop and Poetry Asylum to help us learn more about other ways to support incarcerated individuals.
Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop (MPWW) extends Minnesota’s vibrant literary community to incarcerated men and women. Through high-quality creative writing classes, a one-to-one mail mentor program, and related programming, MPWW fosters literary community and a devotion to art inside of Minnesota’s state prisons.
Poetry Asylum creates diverse platforms outside privileged spaces to bring poetry to traditionally marginalized communities through open dialogue, innovation, collaboration & advocacy [& in some cases, bring marginalized voices INTO privileged, white spaces]. In recognition of the urgencies of our political moment, Poetry Asylum aims to provide refuge for underrepresented voices by celebrating the expansive field of language & expression in all its forms.
