J. Drew Lanham will discuss his book, The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature. Lanham, a certified wildlife biologist, is a professor of wildlife ecology at Clemson University. Co-sponsored by the Friends of Athens-Clarke County Library, UGA’s Environmental Ethics Certificate Program and Athens Land Trust, with support by the UGA Odum School of Ecology, the Oconee Rivers Audubon Society and the Georgia Ornithological Society.
J. Drew Lanham
A native of Edgefield, South Carolina, J. Drew Lanham is the author of The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature. He is a birder, naturalist, hunter-conservationist, and an Alumni Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher at Clemson University.
This memoir is a riveting exploration of the contradictions of Black identity in the rural South, asking what it means to be “the rare bird, the oddity.”
