On September 28th, musician and author Dessa will visit The Loft for a discussion with writer and thinker Safy-Hallan Farah. They’ll talk craft, discuss Dessa’s latest projects, goof off, and invite questions from the audience. The event will begin at 7:30, but arrive at 7 for a happy hour at the Cafe, with music from multi-talented performer LOTT.

Dessa’s new book (My Own Devices) and recent album (Chime) will be available on site. Book sales provided by Milkweed Books. Dessa will chatting post show, with a Sharpie in hand, happy to sign copies.

DESSA, a member of the Doomtree hip-hop crew, has made a career out of bucking traditional genre designations—from rapping at Lollapalooza to arranging for full choir. She co-wrote an episode of the chart-topping podcast Welcome to Night Vale, and was tapped by Lin-Manuel Miranda to record the song “Congratulations” for Billboard’s #1 album The Hamilton Mixtape. Her latest album, Chime, debuted on February 23, 2018. As a writer, Dessa has contributed to The New York Times Magazine, MPR, the Star Tribune, and literary journals around the country. She has published two short works of her own: Spiral Bound (Doomtree Press) and A Pound of Steam (Rain Taxi). Her new collection of essays is My Own Devices (Dutton Books /Penguin Random House).
