A Bride for Anna's Papa

BY Isabel R. Marvin

The death of her mother has left thirteen-year-old Anna Kallio responsible for running the house, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of her nine-year-old brother, Matti. She has no time anymore for school or friends. She and Matti worry about their father, a blacksmith for the iron mines, and decide to find him a new wife. When they try to arrange a match with one of the “mail order” brides arriving from Finland, the results are different from anything Anna expected. The book’s conclusion features the Chisholm Fire of 1908.

Editorial ReviewGoodreads Review

"Set against a compelling background of dangerous iron mines, beautiful lakes and woodlands, a labor struggle, and a multi-ethnic community of European immigrants. . . . Refreshingly matter-of-fact."

Hungry Mind Review

"Well-developed characters and a plot with enough suspense and drama will hold readers' attention throughout."

School Library Journal

“This historical novel provides a view of life on Minnesota's Iron Range near hibbing.”
