Milkweed Editions Launches New Paid Internship Program

Milkweed Staff — 03/05/2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Beginning with our Summer 2019 cohort, Milkweed Editions will relaunch its internship program as a paid program.

While the gateway to working in publishing has typically been a brief, unpaid internship (or several), Milkweed seeks to address this significant barrier to entry by offering a more viable and equitable internship experience, which will include a $1,500 stipend, free books, extensive mentorship with staff, and a range of professional development opportunities.

Milkweed’s internship program offers an intensive introduction to book publishing during which interns contribute meaningfully to work across all areas of our operation, including editorial and acquisitions, book design, publicity, sales/marketing, digital and community engagement, development (fundraising), and nonprofit arts administration. Interns also have the opportunity to learn about the bookselling industry through Milkweed Books, the independent bookstore operated by Milkweed Editions. Interns are encouraged to specialize in areas that best compliment their learning objectives, while mentorship and professional development resources provide deeper opportunities for engagement, marketable skills, and exposure to long-term strategic thinking. The small size of our office and comprehensive approach of our program ensures that participants gain an invaluable foundation in understanding how each department functions collaboratively within the context of the others while exposing participants to a range of possible career trajectories.

The program will accept three participants per semester (spring, summer, fall). Interns will commit to an average of 15 hours/week over the course of four months. (A shorter duration with more hours dedicated per week can also be arranged.) College credit may be available for eligible participants. Applications for the summer session close on March 15, 2019.

More information about the program, typical responsibilities, qualifications, and application instructions are available at milkweed.org/internships.
