Job Opening: Managing Editor

Milkweed Editions, one of the nation’s leading independent book publishers, seeks a Managing Editor. Our offices are located in the Open Book literary center in downtown Minneapolis. For more information, visit milkweed.org/our-story.

The Managing Editor will work closely with the Publisher and the editorial team to manage the editorial and production process leading to the publication of some thirty books each year. Specific responsibilities include building and maintaining production schedules for all titles, engaging and managing contract editors at all stages of the process, corresponding with authors, composing descriptive copy, creating and uploading metadata, copyediting, proofreading, and administering poetry contests. The candidate should be proficient in Adobe Acrobat and Excel and have a basic understanding of HTML text formatting. Familiarity with Salesforce, Photoshop, and InDesign is a plus, but not necessary.

Ideal candidates have at least five years of editorial and/or production experience in book publishing. They are detail-driven, highly organized individuals with strong writing skills and the ability to balance and manage multiple projects at once. Candidates should have a passion for connecting with authors, freelance editors, and other publishing professionals, as well as the desire to be part of a dynamic team and a growing organization. Candidates should be equally comfortable working with and without supervision to meet goals and think creatively to solve problems. A passion for literary publishing is not required, but highly preferred. Supervisory experience is a plus.

This is a full-time, exempt position with benefits. Salary is expected to be in the $60-65K range, determined based on experience. Currently, the Managing Editor should expect to spend time working remotely as well as from the Milkweed offices in Minneapolis.
