In light of recent events, birdwatching has been cast into a national spotlight. Before this, much of America had little knowledge of birders and even less of black birders. On Thursday, June 4, at 12pm and 7pm EST, join a group of today’s young black birdwatchers for two candid conversations, with special guests Christian Cooper and J. Drew Lanham. The panelists will share their stories of discovering birds and their unique experiences of #BirdingWhileBlack in America.

J. Drew Lanham
A native of Edgefield, South Carolina, J. Drew Lanham is the author of The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature. He is a birder, naturalist, hunter-conservationist, and an Alumni Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher at Clemson University.
This memoir is a riveting exploration of the contradictions of Black identity in the rural South, asking what it means to be “the rare bird, the oddity.”
