VIRTUAL EVENT

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. This JABBIES® event will focus on independent presses with extraordinary award-winning reputations far exceeding their size: Milkweed Editions & Tin House! This event is $5. Attendees will receive a $5 off coupon to use once on Fountain Bookstore’s website. Register here!

The conversation will center around the differences between independent presses and Big 5 Publishing and the editorial missions of each house. We will also take a side trip into art direction, a subject not covered much in previous programs.

More about JABBIES®, Milkweed and Tin House, and the event speakers:

Mary Austin Speaker is the art director of Milkweed Editions. Before joining Milkweed’s staff in 2017, Mary worked in New York trade publishing for ten years, managing the Ecco and Smithsonian imprints for HarperCollins Publishers and designing for Simon & Schuster. She co-founded and curated the Triptych Poetry Series in the East Village, and while studying for her MFA in poetry at Indiana University, she taught creative writing and edited the Indiana Review. She has published two collections of poetry—Ceremony (Slope Editions, 2013) and The Bridge (Shearsman Books, 2016)—and edits a chapbook review column for Rain Taxi as well as a series on poetry and power called Society Editions. She has been designing books for Milkweed in a freelance capacity since 2013.

Nanci McCloskey is the Associate Publisher and Director of Marketing and Sales for Tin House. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her two boys.

Masie Cochran is the Editorial Director at Tin House. Before coming to Tin House, she worked at InkWell Management Literary Agency in New York, NY.

Milkweed Editions is an independent publisher of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. We believe that literature has the potential to change the way we see the world. Just as the common milkweed plant is the site of metamorphosis for monarch butterflies, Milkweed Editions seeks to be a site of metamorphosis in the literary ecosystem. We take risks on debut and experimental writers, we invest significant time and care in the editorial process, and we enable dynamic engagement between authors and readers. We operate as a nonprofit to pursue these ends without overbearing financial pressure. And yet, though profits aren’t our primary focus, helping our authors succeed certainly is. Just so, since our founding in 1980, we’ve published over 350 books of literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry and now have over four million copies in circulation. We believe that literature has the potential to change the way we see the world, and that bringing new voices to essential conversations is the clearest path to ensuring a vibrant, diverse, and empowered future.

Tin House expands the boundaries of what great literature can do. Publisher of award-winning books of literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry; home to a renowned workshop and seminar series; and partner of a critically acclaimed podcast, Tin House champions writing that is artful, dynamic, and original. We are proud to publish and promote writers who speak to a wide range of experience, and lend context and nuance to their examination of our world.
