To begin the new year with hope, action, and poetry, Milkweed Books is hosting a reading in support of the Center for Victims of Torture. Headquartered in St. Paul, the Center for Victims of Torture is an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture and violent conflict. The CVT works toward a future where torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. Milkweed Books is honoring the CVT’s work with an evening of readings on the theme of hope from poets Patricia Kirkpatrick, James P. Lenfestey, Wang Ping, Chris Santiago, and Katrina Vandenberg. Gather with us to celebrate what gives us hope in the new year.
Light refreshments provided. Free and open to the public, donations to the CVT encouraged.
Chris Santiago
Chris Santiago is the author of Tula, winner of the 2016 Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry, selected by A. Van Jordan. He teaches literature, sound culture, and creative writing at the University of St. Thomas.
James P. Lenfestey
James P. Lenfestey is the author of Seeking the Cave: A Pilgrimage to Cold Mountain, a Minnesota Book Award finalist, and multiple collections of essays and poems, including A Marriage Book. He is chair of the Literary Witnesses poetry series, teaches at the Mackinac Island Poetry Festival, and lives in Minneapolis with his wife.
Patricia Kirkpatrick
Patricia Kirkpatrick is the author of Blood Moon as well as Odessa, which was awarded the first Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry and the 2013 Minnesota Book Award. Her awards include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Jerome Foundation, the McKnight Foundation, the Loft Literary Center, and the Minnesota State Arts Board. She has taught writing at many colleges, most recently in the University of Minnesota MFA program. She lives in Saint Paul.
