Join Milkweed Editions as we welcome Amy and Dave Freeman to Minneapolis for the launch of North American Odyssey and a lovely panel of their choosing for a discussion. In addition to a reading from the new book, Amy and Dave will be engaging with Wendy Bennett, a Board of Trustee member for the National Parks Conservation Association, Alex Falconer, Campaign Manager for Boundary Waters Action Fund and candidate for the House of Representative District 49A, Larry Kraft, current State Representative for Minnesota House District 46A, and Becky Rom, a member of the Governing Council of The Wilderness Society.

Vote for the Environment will focus on how the environmental issues witnessed during the writing of the Freeman’s newest book have only grown more urgent, and possible ways environmental decline can either be curtailed or perpetuated by elected officials at all levels. The importance of electing individuals who champion a sustainable future will be touched on by the writers.

This event is not a part of any candidate campaign for office nor will it be used to platform or rally for certain representatives. This is for educational purposes that can cross political divides.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When National Geographic Adventurers of the Year Amy and Dave Freeman marry, they set out on an unusual honeymoon: a three-year, 12,000-mile journey across North America. From Alaska’s Inside Passage to Florida’s Key West, they traverse the continent by kayak, canoe, dogsled, and skis, encountering wildlife, sublime landscapes, and harrowing challenges.

Along the way, the Freemans also bear witness to environmental degradation and climate change—from plastic-covered beaches to forest fires to retreating glaciers. And as they engage with Native and rural communities most impacted by the changes resulting from modern industrial society and meet individuals and organizations dedicated to protecting the natural world, their adventure deepens in ways they never imagined.

From the white-knuckle rush of paddling white water to the wonderment of dogsledding across a frosted landscape where caribou and wolves roam, North American Odyssey is a celebration of our interconnectedness to the natural world and to each other. Beautifully written, engagingly told, and inspiring throughout, Amy and Dave Freeman’s story is a clarion call for change in the way we live.

ABOUT THE HOSTS

Amy and Dave Freeman have traveled over 50,000 miles through some of the world’s wildest places, from the Amazon to the Arctic. They were named Adventurers of the Year by National Geographic in 2014, and they are also the authors of A Year in the Wilderness, an award-winning book about the year they spent in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. When they aren’t on expeditions, their sailboat, or speaking tours, they are based in Ely, Minnesota, where they organize and lead canoe and dogsled trips.
