What We Believe

Daniel Slager — 12/14/2016

Dear Reader,

Thank you for the many ways you supported Milkweed Editions in 2016—you’ve fueled an exceptionally busy year here at the press. In addition to acquiring, editing, and publishing a list of outstanding books by inspiring authors, we developed a new web site and opened a bookstore to help us build an increasingly engaged and diverse community of readers. Your support is enabling real progress for our organization, and we are profoundly grateful.

As we prepare to conclude one of the most significant years in our thirty-six year history, and in light of the terribly divisive election our nation just experienced, we are reflecting on the bigger picture, asking ourselves and our readers: What place do books and bookstores have in our community and country?

We believe that independent publishers and booksellers serve an invaluable role in America today. We provide a means by which readers discover different perspectives and new points of view, encouraging empathy and a sense of common humanity. As a nonprofit organization, we are empowered to make decisions about the books we publish based on our mission, not a bottom line.

If you believe, as we do, that the authors we support and books we publish are more essential than ever, please consider giving a year-end gift to Milkweed Editions today to help us continue to create beautiful, meaningful books. Click here to donate now.

Thank you,

Daniel Slager
Publisher & CEO

P.S. Our board of directors has put together a $50,000 challenge to match all new gifts. Give today to make your donation go further!
