14th Annual MahtoREADi
Bringing together one community with one book. Local author of Sins of Our Fathers, Shawn Lawrence Otto will discuss his novel, his process, and more. Light refreshments will be served during book signing. Books will be available for purchase. MahtoREADi is graciously supported by Mahtomedi Community Education and Washington County Library with funds received from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

LearningLife Seminar: LL X055: The War on Science
This seminar, taught by author Shawn Otto, will investigate the historical, social, philosophical, political, and emotional reasons why evidence-based politics are in decline, and authoritarian politics on both the right and left are again on the rise, as well as some compelling solutions to bring us to our collective senses before it’s too late. LearningLife seminars embrace Socrates’s belief in inquiry and exchange. Seminars include both lecture and critical discussion. Tuition includes continental breakfast.

Ada Limón at the University of Kentucky
The Visiting Writers Series at the University of Kentucky is a part of the MFA in Creative Writing program, and adds to the vibrant literary culture of Lexington. Events are free and open to the public.

The Writing By Writers Workshop @ Tomales Bay
The Writing By Writers Workshop @ Tomales Bay brings aspiring writers into close community with nationally known poets and writers. Manuscript and poetry workshopsare limited to 12 participants and generative workshops are limited to 15 to ensure an intimate setting. Registration closes on October 15, 2016. Faculty includes Richard Bausch, Pam Houston, Ada Limón, Paul Lisicky, Justin Torres, and Claire Vaye Watkins.

Rest in Peace, Max Ritvo
One Friday afternoon this past May, I received an email from Martha Collins. She asked me to consider a manuscript by a young poet named Max Ritvo. Jean Valentine had selected his work for a chapbook competition, Martha explained, and Lucie Brock-Broido had selected some of the poems in the manuscript for publication in the Boston Review. Martha added only that there was some urgency, as an illness had thrust this young man into what would become the final stage of his life.
