Book Performance: "economy" by Gabrielle Civil

A celebration of artist and scholar Gabrielle Civil’s new performance memoir, Swallow the Fish (Civil Coping Mechanisms).

Civil will perform her piece “economy,” featured in Swallow the Fish, in which she creates original work on a typewriter for shoppers in real time. Books will be available for purchase and signing, and for each person who buys a copy at Milkweed Books, Civil will write and sign a personalized typed poem or love letter. Analicia Sotelo Wins Inaugural Jake Adam York Prize

We are pleased to announce that Analicia Sotelo is the inaugural winner of the Jake Adam York Prize for a first or second collection of poems, presented in partnership by Copper Nickel and Milkweed Editions, judged by Ross Gay. Sotelo will receive $2,000 and her debut collection, Virgin, will be published by Milkweed Editions in February 2018.

Analicia Sotelo is the author of Virgin, the inaugural winner of the Jake Adam York Prize, selected by Ross Gay, to be published by Milkweed Editions in February 2018. She is also the author of Nonstop Godhead, which was selected by Rigoberto González for a 2016 Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowship.

“Masterpiece” is a label I am quite wary to use on contemporary literature, but Lincoln in the Bardo has won me over so completely that I’m afraid I can’t avoid it. In fact, I didn’t even want to write this post. Colson Whitehead has already reviewed the book masterfully and George Saunders certainly doesn’t need our help in boosting sales for his eighth book of fiction—even though this is his first novel. But: there are books we read and enjoy for their prose or creativity in storytelling; books we enjoy while reading and then forget fairly quickly. This, for me, is no such book.

Tim Winton

Tim Winton has published over two dozen books for adults and children, and his work has been translated into twenty-eight languages. He has received the Miles Franklin Award four times and twice been shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Island Home is his first work of memoir published in the United States. He lives in Western Australia.

Craig Cliff

Craig Cliff is the author of The Mannequin Makers, a novel, and A Man Melting, a collection of short stories, which won the 2011 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book. He lives in Wellington, New Zealand.
