Milkweed Editions is deeply saddened to report that Richard Wagamese passed away in his home on Friday, March 10, 2017. He was 61. Wagamese was the author of more than 15 books ranging across fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, including the novels Medicine Walk, Dream Wheels, and Indian Horse. Much of his work drew from his own struggle with family dysfunction that he attributed to the isolating government- and church-run schools, attended by his parents and extended family members. Wagamese called himself a second-generation survivor of these experiences.

We’re proud to be part of the independent publishing community, promoting titles that breed independent minds, break the mold, and dare to be different. In support of our fellow independents, we’ve teamed up with a few presses to draw attention to big books from smaller publishers across the country. At 5:30 p.m., join poets and poetry fans for a party in the Milkweed Editions office suite featuring poetry-themed drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Ticketed reception: $25 General Admission | $10 Student Ticket | FREE for Poets.

At 7:00 p.m., the party continues with a reading in the Target Performance Hall featuring the finalists for this year’s $10,000 Lindquist & Vennum…

We are pleased to announce that Analicia Sotelo is the inaugural winner of the Jake Adam York Prize for a first or second collection of poems, presented in partnership by Copper Nickel and Milkweed Editions, judged by Ross Gay. Sotelo will receive $2,000 and her debut collection, Virgin, will be published by Milkweed Editions in February 2018.

Over the coming months, we’ll be teaming up with a few other independent publishers to do just that, each time highlighting books on different themes. Today—two days after Donald Trump ordered a media blackout at all government agencies, and one day after employees of those government agencies launched “rogue” social media accounts—#climatefacts is trending worldwide on Twitter. The Twitterstorm is organized by 350.org, the international environmental organization founded by Bill McKibben. A statement from 350.org reads, “Denying climate change is irresponsible and will put millions of people at greater risk of harm from pollution, climate disruption, and fossil fuel extraction … Help defend science and the welfare of people everywhere.” To get involved, 350.org has compiled a variety of resources and vetted facts.

In many respects, 2016 feels like a year that has mostly taken: from the notable artists we’ve lost—including two of our own, Max Ritvo and Phebe Hanson—to the countless assaults on the bodies and fundamental rights of our brothers and sisters, our environment, and our democracy. At this moment, when the losses are so tangible and when consumerism is at its height, we offer our deepest gratitude for all you have given in 2016.

One of the largest annual regional poetry prizes, the Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry celebrates a region rich with poetic heritage and seeks to support poets residing in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Srikanth Reddy has been named as the 2017 judge. Submissions for the prize, now in its sixth year, will be open from January 2–February 15. There is no fee to submit.
